The Chivalry Joust of Sulmona, abandoned in the seventeenth century to "set aside or lack of warriors", has returned to life, albeit inevitably adapted to the times: no more knights errant to engage in bloody battles, no fence to divide the field or "barrel" courses in "follower", no longer the "maintainer" perched in his iron armor or broken lances and even less bleeding wounds. All this is just past record, the history of the past. Modern Joust, which always takes place on the traditional "field" of Piazza Maggiore, participating for now only four Sestieri three villages of the medieval town (only seven out of eleven), represented by a horse-rider combination chosen by lot. Each competitor will run the track at full gallop, trying to stick with the spear rings of different diameters (6, 8 and 10 cm.) Pendants by the shapes of the three maintainers located along the route. The score will be calculated based on threaded rings: in case of even number will take into account the diameter and, in the event of a further tie, the time taken will prevail. The combat is focused on direct clashes, articulated so that each contender will face four opponents chosen with a prize draw, for a total of 14 clashes that will run between Saturday and Sunday. At the end of this first phase, the four who will have the most points will compete with each other to define the two who will contest the final victory. The race course is specially decorated for the occasion with the arrangement of about 2700 cubic meters of earth specially selected, the path figure-eight track with seedlings of cherry laurel and arrangement of the stands around the competition venue that can host about 4000 spectators. In the best tradition of the ancient Giostra, to the district or village winner will be awarded the traditional "Palio", while the rider goes a gold chain with a medal depicting the emblem of Sulmona with the acronym comes from Ovid's famous hemistich "Sulmo mihi patria East". The Palio consists of painting made on canvas with oil paint on the size of mt. 1.20 x 2.40 is then covered with cloth and packed with trimmings. For Chivalry Tournament of Sulmona the Palio is accomplished by a winner artist of international competition specially organized while the Jousting Europe the Palio is produced by an artist of the National Anthem of the last edition. The Sestieri and Borghi When the Committee began to study the project of the "new" Carousel, he soon realized that it was not possible to propose a race under the same criteria of the historical one and it was therefore necessary to think of something different that but he was able to ensure this event a boost and a participation felt by the whole city of Sulmona. The obvious conclusion of this research led to the creation of a carousel model based on race between knights representing territorial divisions of our Old Town, but also open to the participation of riders territories representatives "external" (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, Countries) . At the time that took place the Joust, our City was closed by a first wall (in part still exists) that started in the north, from the beginning of the Corso Ovidio (corner of Via di Porta Romana ) and he ran to the south, at the Palazzo San Francesco Rotunda. These walls provide for SEI gates of the City, four more or less exist to date (Porta Bonomini, Iapasseri Porta, Porta Filiamabili, Porta Manaresca) and two by now, unfortunately, disappeared (Porta Salvatoris and Porta Sancti Yachts). To answer then to the needs of a growing population, buildings had been constructed, housing and not outside of this first wall and this led to the birth of those who, historically, were called Borghi. In a second time, they were also enclosed by a second wall and the one that goes from Porta Napoli in San Panfilo, with the two Circulars. In the light of this historical fact, the Historical Commission of the organizational structure of the Tournament has decided to divide the center of Sulmona in SEVEN areas, calling SESTIERI those that are included inside the first wall (SEI had to be, one for each of the six antique doors, but since two of them have now disappeared, has been forced to define only four Sestieri, meeting, perhaps, a difficult word game) and calling VILLAGES those between the first and the second wall (the villages were more than three, but to avoid excessive splits, saw the depopulation of the historic center, it was decided to only three re-propose, Pacentrano Borgo, Borgo S. Maria della Tomba, Borgo S. Panfilo). Were invited to participate in the organization of activities in these villages in the districts and all who were born or have lived or currently live there and those who are born to them, or even those who, for one reason or another, however, they ask to participate. Each Sestiere and village has its own association considered regularly participates in the Joust with his rider, has its own banner, a flag, its own representatives in the Historical Parade, cure the decoration of their homes and streets during the days of the Tournament and other festivals, pays the utmost attention to the care and preservation of its architectural heritage and will organize various activities that are scheduled both during the Tournament that in other times of the year.
