During our trip in Spain, we covered Madrid and Barcelona. I am a die hard football - FC Barcelona fan but also have respect for FC Real Madrid because of the legends that have played there.
To my irony, it was an off season in LA liga and all football players were off for international duties...but nevertheless I had been to Barcelona once before and was lucky enough at that time, to see a match at the Camp Nou.
This time we were off for a business shoot for the IIFA awards, which took place in Madrid and after that we had planned a leisure trip to barcelona.
In Madrid we stayed at Puerta silken Madrid hotel, it was a decent 4-star business hotel with a shuttle service from the airport, costing us about Rs.5000/- per day incl. Breakfast.
Although Madrid is a small place and much of it can be covered by foot if u stay in the downtown area. I strongly recommend using buses to commute to farther places..the taxi's are really expensive. This hold true for Spain in general, another piece of advice, refill water bottles at the place u are staying at, tap water is safe to consume...because the water bottles are really expensive.
Do not miss out on the Santiago bernebau stadium in Madrid and also the Puerta de Sol market in downtown.
Metro is also a good way to commute in Madrid but I found buses more convenient.
If u plan to go to barcelona from Madrid as we did, then the best way would be by high speed renfe trains. The tickets for the same can be bought from Atocha station. Costing u around rs5000/- per person if you book them 2-3 days prior to ur travel date.
I would suggest, you download the Google translate app on ur phone, because language is a big problem in Madrid. Also don't book hotels or hostels instead use Air bnb, it is pretty simple to book, really comfortable and super cheap.
In Barcelona u will arrive at Barcelona de Sants if u travel by train, here also buses and metro are the best and cheapest mode of transport. The major to do things that I would recommend would be the Sagrada Familia (Gothic church), tibi tabo (the church and amusement park on top of the hill), the Camp Nou football stadium,la Rambla street and the beach.
The beach is were all the fun is at, all the night clubs are on the beach and it really comes up to life in the evening. But the party only starts after 1am and goes on until 6am.
To people's surprise Spain is a safe place to travel to and only petty crimes like pick pocketing are the ones of which one should be aware of. The people also were very kind and loving.
All in all I had a good and memorable experience with my family in Spain.
