I don't think that I have seen a more beautiful place then Bethel, Maine. We decided to travel there for a week long vacation as a family. My husband and I wanted to do a lot of hiking and well, the kids weren't thrilled about that, but at least there was a pool and a lake. We didn't have any major plans for our trip, we were going to take everything one day at a time. We really wanted to get a feel for the area.
Well, the second we arrived at The Bethel Inn, I knew I was going to enjoy my week no matter what. It was a cozy inn that transported me back in time. I could imagine people staying there decades earlier and not having a care in the world. Once we got settled into our townhouse on the property, we decided to take a walk through town. The Town Square was right next to the Inn and we found that we could walk from one end of town to the other in about seven minutes.
There is a lot of stores in town as well as a couple of restaurants, but I found my favorite right away!
I knew the first stop I was making the very next morning! And, yes, we did, we went to DiCocoa's for a delicious cup of coffee and a couple of pastries. The kids even went with us!
We went on many hikes when we were in Bethel. I believe we spent four days hiking. Many of them were shorter hikes like Screw Auger Falls, Mother Walker Falls, and Moose Cave. Others were a little more challenging.
Screw Auger Falls
Mother Walker Falls
Moose Cave - According to the legend in town, a moose fell into this cave one night when it was dark and stormy out. He was unable to get out and his cries for help could be heard for miles. He ended up dying inside the cave and visitors are warned to be careful not to slip while hiking near the cave, so that they do not meet the same fate as that unfortunate moose.
On our last hike in Maine, we did a very long one. It was about 2 treacherous miles up and then back down. The views at the top made all of the hard work worthwhile though. I almost didn't want to leave that spot. It was such a beautiful day and I have decided that even though it is possible to love Maine at any time of the year, the summer time would be my favorite. Sunny days, warm temperatures, and spectacular views that go on for miles.
We did venture out closer to the Atlantic Ocean when we were in Maine. We just had to check out the L.L. Bean village of stores. The rest of our time was spent at the pool or the nearby lake. I loved the lake, because we could take canoes and kayaks out on the water and just sit and relax all day long.
It was the perfect family vacation and it was wonderful to get away from the hustle and bustle of the real world.
