Zaanse Schans Windmill was always on our list since we landed here in Netherlands 1.5 years back. It moved on top many times once any of our friends put pictures of windmill on social networking sites.

Finally on a sunny day, which is rare in Amsterdam, we planned to go there and the place was superb.

We took Connexion bus 391 from Amsterdam Central to Zaanse Schans (last stop of bus), the journey was of around 40 min. This bus runs at every 15 minutes.

There are trains(intercity/sprinter) also available from Amsterdam Central(other stations of Amsterdam as well) to Koog-Zaandijk. Train journey would be of 15-20 minutes with subsequent walk of 20 minutes to windmill site.

You can plan your journey by public transport at http://9292.nl/

Follow the crowd after getting off the bus, you don't need to ask or google search how and where to go.

The first look of windmills

Walking further was the Cheese Farm, you won't miss it - just follow your nose for the smell of cheese that wafts out of this farm.

Finally we reached to the bank of River Zaan, where the windmills are located

Name of the mills : Het Jonge Schaap ("the young sheep"), De Zoeker ("the seeker"), De Kat ("the cat"), De Gekroonde Poelenburg ("the crowned poelenburg") and De Huisman ("the houseman").

What's amazing about these windmills is that the sails can be turned to face the wind so that the mill can continue its operations throughout the day
